Dhaniya Panjiri - Janmashtami Panjiri - Panjiri in Honour of Shri Krishna
Panjri is a sweet delight
for Janmashtami. Janmashtami, the auspicious celebration of Lord Krishna's
birth, is a time for devotees to come together and offer their prayers and
devotion. One of the delightful traditions associated with this festival is the
preparation and sharing of special sweets and treats. Among these, Panjri
stands out as a wholesome and flavorful offering.
Ingredients:
- Coriander
Powder: 1 cup
- Cashew
Nuts: 1/2 cup, finely chopped
- Almonds:
1/2 cup, finely chopped
- Sugar
Powder: 1 cup
- Cardamom:
4-5 pods, crushed
- Desi
Ghee (clarified butter): 1/2 cup
Instructions:
1. Roasting Coriander Powder:
- Begin
by dry roasting the coriander powder in a pan on low heat until it
releases a fragrant aroma. This step is crucial as it enhances the flavor
of the Panjri.
2. Preparing the Nut Mixture:
- Heat
a tablespoon of desi ghee in a separate pan and lightly roast the chopped
cashew nuts and almonds until they turn golden brown. Remove them from the
heat and set aside.
3. Mixing the Panjri:
- In a
large mixing bowl, combine the roasted coriander powder, sugar powder, and
the roasted nut mixture. Ensure they are mixed well.
4. Adding Cardamom Flavor:
- Crush
the cardamom pods to release their seeds and fragrance. Add the crushed
cardamom seeds to the mixture. This imparts a delightful and aromatic
touch to the Panjri.
5. Ghee Infusion:
- In
the same pan used for roasting nuts, add the remaining desi ghee. Heat it
until it melts and becomes aromatic. Then, pour this warm ghee over the
mixture. The ghee infusion is essential for binding the ingredients
together.
6. Shaping the Panjri:
- While
the mixture is still warm, shape it into small, bite-sized balls or
squares. You can use your hands or a mold for this. Make sure to press the
mixture firmly to ensure it holds its shape.
7. Let It Cool:
- Place
the shaped Panjri on a clean tray or plate and let them cool completely.
This will help them set and become firm.
8. Serve and Share:
- Once
the Panjri has cooled and solidified, it is ready to be offered to Lord
Krishna and shared with family and friends as prasad. The delightful
combination of coriander, nuts, sugar, and cardamom creates a rich and
aromatic flavor that is sure to please both the deity and those partaking
in this festive treat.
Panjri not only makes for a delicious offering
during Janmashtami but also a delightful sweet for any special occasion. Its
unique blend of ingredients symbolizes the richness and sweetness of life, much
like the teachings of Lord Krishna. Enjoy this traditional treat as you
celebrate the birth of the divine child, Krishna, and share its goodness with
your loved ones. Click for video -
